Day three, we walked around the city for a while since our ferry didn't leave for Alcatraz until around noon. So we ended up in a park, by the Bay bridge. We walked slowly enjoying the beautiful morning towards our pier.

The park had some interesting art...

Our ferry to the island

Alcatraz as seen from the ferry; this is the cellhouse.

The first building is/was were the military/guards resided. A couple things I learned from the tour, the guards live on the rock with their families. The building in the back was a social hall for the residents. They had all their parties and holidays in that building.

the cell

Dwen in the cell...he is sad they don't have the internet on the rock!

The solitary confident. Inside was regular bars, they would shut the huge pink colored metal door as well.

I'm standing in one of the isolation rooms in D block. The inmates were cut off from everything including light. During the audio tour, one inmate said that whenever he was in isolation, he would pull a button from his jumpsuit and flip it in the air. Then get on his hands and knees in the dark and searched for it., just to pass the time. This just blew my mind!

Outside, with the view of San Francisco, the audio tour said that on New Years Eve, on a clear night, the inmates could hear the distant parties from the other side of the bay.

The light house, first one on the pacific coast.

There was only 3 inmates to escape. They got off the island but was never heard from again. They believe they perished in the water. Here is where the escapees dug their way to freedom, using spoons from the kitchen. It took over a year.

This was once the 15 room mansion of the Warden. They are trying hard to preserve the island and the buildings. You can see big steel beams holding the wall together. For being so run down, the island is beautiful with life of birds and plants of all kinds. I took over 300 pictures just at the rock...too hard to post all of them. This was the best part of the entire trip and would strongly recommend going to Alcatraz if you get out to S.F.
